Re-Creation

There must be some way to start anew. Games need to be revitalized if they are to survive for our benefit instead of us living for them.

I want to take a look at several academic studies of games that I find to be of benefit.

Flow by Jenova Chen for MFA Thesis @ USC

Katamari Damacy by Keita Takahashi for Senior Thesis @ Digital Hollywood with Namco

One thing I'm finding to be a bit disturbing is the apparent obsession of using new technology. These days it is understandable that people want to see new stuff and new ways of doing things. Nonetheless, quality should not suffer for the sake of newness.

These games offer a very different take on our world of gaming. They've introduced the simplicity of yesterday to the technology of today.

Game Development

game1 (gm) Pronunciation Key Audio pronunciation of "games" [P]
n.
  1. An activity providing entertainment or amusement; a pastime: party games; word games.

Games were originally created due to peoples desire to experience fun and was done so during downtime.

Games are here to be a fun escape from the grim things found in life but... if the design of those games loses its pleasing quality, what is to remain?

As a gamer, I can't bear to see the pressure of business being thrown into my world of freedom. Still, I don't know there to be anything that can be done about it. When games are no longer being made to provide players with a sense of fun and instead are driven by their ability to occupy the masses, I start feeling like a zombie or slave.

That blows chunks.

Purpose

This blog will be used to map the path to game development.
